A Little Taste of a Lot of Shaw

Shaw has been exploding with new restaurants & bars, and oh man are they Shawsome! Whether you’re in the mood for doughnuts (with a hidden speakeasy) or Mexican and mezcal, you can find it in this ‘hood. Even with its food and beverage boom, Shaw maintains a cozy community vibe, making it an essential DC dining destination. This year’s Taste of Shaw gala, put on by Shaw Main Streets on April 18, brought together a bunch of the best Shaw eateries that repped the area oh so well. We could tell you all about it, but we’d rather show you. Check out all the Shaw deliciousness under one roof @ Howard Theatre and get ready for next year!

To start, a cocktail from Service Bar, using our favorite—Illegal Resposado Mezcal. Combined with horchata, pineapple, & lime, this smoky cocktail was one of our top drinks of the night.

Next, a flavorful bite from Espita Mezcaleria—a Tostada de Camaron. The shrimp was so fresh and the tostada was the perfect flavor-vessel!

Wash it down with another cocktail, this time from Farmers & Distillers. They served up a whiskey cocktail using Founding Spirits American Whiskey, lemon, ginger, & cane syrup. The ginger added the perfect amount of spicy ginger bite. This lovely delight was adorned with a pretty little flower. Don’t you feel pretty just looking at it?

Morrison Clark Historic Inn & Restaurant had another one of our favorites of the evening– a sesame tuna wonton topped with wasabi aioli & seaweed salad. All you sushi lovers out there would grab this up. The best trifecta: tuna, wasabi, seaweed salad. YAS

If you haven’t already noticed, we love mezcal, so we were pumped to see that Haikan was serving up mezcal too! Their cocktail combined the mezcal with sake, midori, calpico, & citrus. The result was a refreshing, yellow-green colored drink that we unabashedly went back for a refill of.

Now it’s time for..tomato pie! Served up by Calico. Never had tomato pie? If you get the opportunity to try it, do it. It’s like pizza, but heavy on the tomato and light on the cheese.

La Jambe came prepared to fresh-slice prosciutto. Is there anything more meatily satisfying?

Drumroll please, we’d now like to present to you…DOUGHNUTS! From Sugar Shack to be exact!

Oh me oh my. If we could, we would have tried one of every flavor. There were even multiple vegan-friendly doughnuts, like the OREO OVERLOAD. We’re literally salivating. Can we go get a doughnut now?

And, because there always needs to be more than 1 dessert (that’s a MUST, #amiright?!) Dolci Gelati scooped gelato & even sorbetti (dairy-free!). We combined the yuzu and pear/ginger flavors in one cup, and it was Phenomenal with a capital P.

And there was SO. MUCH. MORE! Taste of Shaw promises unlimited tastes and libations from top Shaw restaurants and bars, and they more than delivered. Check out more of this Shawsome party below!
