Feeling Patriotic Vibes: An Inside Look at Declaration’s Independently Fab Happy Hour

Perfect for both left and right wing Happy Hour goers, Declaration has one of the District’s most patriotic Happy Hours. We took an inside look at this Shaw frontrunner, and the behind the scenes peek confirmed our allegiance to the flag. Here’s why you need to drop into this Happy Hour and take a break from the day-to-day politics of well, life!

{They Care About You}

Shout out to Declaration for offering Happy Hour 7 days a week. That’s a sure fire way to cross party lines, if we’ve ever head of one. According to bar manager, Tammy Vodinh, Declaration understands not everyone works a “9-to-5” type of gig – especially in Shaw. They want their Happy Hour experience to be accessible to folks in their community, so they don’t limit Happy Hour to Monday to Friday. When a spot is putting that type of thought into their Happy Hour offerings, we can’t help but put our hands over our hearts. Ok, we’ll stop with the patriotic jargon for a bit, but we can definitely appreciate that they get that weekend Happy Hour was one of the best things ever invented.

 {Entrees Remixed and Re-mastered}

This Happy Hour menu wasn’t created by happenstance. Executive Chef, Demetrio Zavala, is working his magic in the kitchen to remix full size entrees into approachable Happy Hour bites. Let us introduce you to Eggplant Parmesan Sliders, a tasty bite size version of the heartier Eggplant Parmesan entrée offered on the dinner menu. And if you’re still not convinced of this magic, try the Philly Cheesesteak sandwich, the little cousin to the PA Benjamin Franklin pizza pie. Both feature tender cheesesteak and gooey cheese sauce, just swap one carb for the other, and voila! Other Happy Hour bites include Prosciutto tomato mozzarella sliders, freshly popped, pop-corn, and roasted balsamic marinated chicken wings.

 {They Clap Mint Leaves to Wake Them}

You heard that right, folks. At Declaration, they clap their mint leaves to wake em up and extract their best flavors. What’s even better, you’re getting these super woke mint leaves on Happy Hour! Head mixologist, John Hogan, leads a team of bar managers that have curated an inventive mix of craft cocktails. And… EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. of these craft cocktails is offered on Happy Hour. There are few sights more glorious than a talented bartender putting meticulous detail into a fabulous cocktail, and they’re showing off at Declaration where they use tweezers to grab your straw before gingerly placing it in your beverage of choice. We’ll happily sit back at the bar and enjoy the view.

{It Just Feels Good in There}

Think of the show, “Cheers”. Now, take everything that is cheesy and cliché out of the picture and replace it with a shot of eclecticism and urban style. While Declaration may have a tough, brick exterior, the staff is very personable and likes to get to know the folks they’re serving (if that’s your thing, of course). Local artists Matt McMullen and Howard Connelly designed the interior space, and they hit the nail on the head. Blending the visible pipes in the Atlantic Plumbing building with wood beams, they’ve brought a little something for the red party, the blue party and everyone in between. The space is inviting and warm (and not just because of the huge pizza oven), and you can’t help but stay a while.
